ELIJAH OF BURTON

Summer reading is coming close to the end.  Are you or your kids bored yet?  If you have Elijah of Buxton, this is a perfect time to open it up this, How did the residents of Buxton welcome the new members?  (More than one answer may be right.) a) Ring the bell,  b) Tell them that this was “The Best Day of Life,” or  c) Hide them. A few books are still available for $8.00 and can be picked up at coffee hour.

BLESSING OF THE BACKPACKS

Let’s send our children, youth, college students and even teachers off to school with our blessings!  Today and next Sunday, September 5 (you can choose which date to participate), we’d like all students and teachers bring their back packs or whatever they will be using this school year to carry books, papers, etc. back and forth to school.  During the service, we will be blessing the back packs (and the students and teachers!) and invite everyone to come and be a part of this event.

READING PARTNERS

Men as Peacemakers is looking for a few good readers.  They are looking for people who want to help a child improve their reading skills and make a friend at the same time.  In the Reading Partners Program, caring adults are connected with students to meet once a week to read together for about a half an hour.  Through this activity, the student has an opportunity to be more successful scholastically.  The commitment is limited to one year, unless the volunteer wishes to continue. The volunteer will undergo a reference and criminal background check.

If you are interested, please contact Dennis Crumb, Volunteer Coordinator at Men As Peacemakers at 727-1939 or his email at dennis@menaspeacemakers.org.  Dennis will be happy to send you an application or answer any questions.

ST. PAUL’S ARCHIVES ARE MOVING

Following the 10 a.m. service volunteers are needed to help move our archives to a new location.  Gather outside the sanctuary for instructions. With enough helpers we should be done quickly.

DAMIANO SOUP KITCHEN

Labor Day, Monday, September 6th is St. Paul’s day to prepare and serve lunch at the Damiano Soup Kitchen located at 206 W. 4th St.  The time is 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., volunteers are always needed.  Please contact Nelson Thomas (525-5785) if you can help.  Half shifts are available. People appreciate it is the only meal offered on Labor Day .

NEIGHBORHOOD PICNIC

Volunteers are needed to join the Men’s Group for “flyering” the neighborhood.  Help invite our neighbors to the picnic.  Spend 1/2 hour putting out flyers on cars and door-to-door in St. Paul’s neighborhood.  Meet after church, September 5th, at 11:30 a.m. by the Greysolon entrance to pick up flyers and get organized. Contact Nelson Thomas (525-5785) or Sally Maxwell (349-9917).  The Picnic is Tuesday, September 7, 5-7 p.m. in the Greysolon parking lot.  Everyone welcome.  Good Food.   Music by the Rubins.

SPECIAL SUNDAY FORUM

Mark your calendars now.  On Sunday, September 19, Mary Ann Pevas, O.P., a Dominican Sister, consultant to Middle Eastern bankers, will share with us her current ministry:  to dispel the myths about Islam which cause fear and hatred, and to build bridges of understanding between the United States and the Middle East. She will speak following the coffee hour and again at 4:00 p.m.

ADOPT-A-BACKPACK

CHUM is once again working with the Duluth School District to host a “Back to School Fair” on Tuesday, August 24. Families with limited resources will be provided school supplies and backpacks at this event. Over 600 backpacks were distributed in 2009. You can either donate a backpack plus the supplies to fill it OR donate the money for supplies. NOTE: Some basic supplies are not listed as there is a sufficient amount of those items.

GRADE K-5 BACKPACK: $15 donation OR a backpack filled with:

            3 wide-ruled notebooks           1 crayon box
          6 pencils                              3 pocket folders

GRADE 6-12 BACKPACK: $18 donation OR backpack filled with:

6 pencils, 3 pens                     college-ruled loose leaf paper
            3-ring binder                           3 pocket folders
            3 college-ruled notebooks

To ensure fairness to all, we pack each backpack identically based on this list. It is most helpful to us if you don’t include additional items in your donation. If you are unable to donate a full backpack, the items we most need each year are backpacks, 3-ring binders and pocket folders.

Please make checks payable to: Churches United in Ministry. Donations can be dropped off between 9a.m.-1p.m. weekdays at CHUM Food Shelf East, 120 N 1st Ave W, or call ahead if you need to schedule a different time, 727-2391. For more information, contact Meg Kearns, CHUM Distributive Services Coordinator @ 727-2391 or megkearns@chumduluth.org.

OUTREACH NEEDS

Barb Hauck is running low on supplies she gives to people in need and can use the following: diapers, baby wipes, shampoo/conditioner, bar soap, toothpaste & tooth brushes, deodorant.

MESSENGER MAILING

HELP! A few more hands are needed to ready the Messenger for mailing! Usually it’s done on the last Thursday of the month at 9 - 11 a.m. in the Parish Hall. Men’s strong hands would be welcome, too! The rewards are: you are needed, appreciated, coffee & treats! Leave your name with Joy Williams (727-8992) or the office (724-3535).

THE REPOSITORY

The materials in The Repository have been changed.  Take time to look at a copy of the February 1896 Messenger.

SUGGESTION BOX

There is a Suggestion Box located in the back of the sanctuary if you have suggestions or questions for the vestry.

PRAYER STATION

The second and fourth Sunday of each month the prayer station is available near the baptismal font following the 10:00 am service. This means someone is there to pray with you if you have a concern, need, intention or thanksgiving for yourself or someone else. This is a simple, yet profound, way of offering what is on your mind and heart to God.

OFFERING ENVELOPES

Are available in the back entrance of church.  They are in alphabetical order.

Church Doors and Safety

  • For building safety Mondays though Fridays, the only unlocked door to the church may be on Superior Street.  Please
enter through that door.  If you know the keypad code for the Greysolon Rd entrance and find the outside door unlocked you
    may enter through that door.

  • For regularly scheduled events the Greysolon door will be open and will remain open until the event is over.  If you have
an appointment with someone in the building be sure to inquire as to which entrance to use.

  • All doors are unlocked on Sunday mornings.

  • Please be patient as we work to make the building a safer place for all who pass through these doors.  If you have questions
or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact the church office.

THE EARLY HISTORY of The Parish Messenger is on display in the church Repository. The Messenger shown is for October 1895. Note the interesting advertisements.

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN BEING AN USHER, please call Mary Ann & Chuck Howard, 525-1533.  They would love to put you on the usher schedule.

HELP!   We are looking for the names and addresses of all college students in the parish so we can send the MESSENGER to them on a regular basis, as well as cards and notes of encouragement and support.  Send or drop off the information to Susan's attention with our thanks.
