Parent's Night Out is coming again!

If you didn’t get to enjoy the first Parent’s Night Out in October, now is your chance to get in on the fun! Friday, December 14 is another opportunity for parents to bring their kids to church at 6pm where they will be fed a delicious meal and then be taken care of by loving, experienced grandparents! And it’s all free for the parents! After a short comedy clip and some appetizers and refreshments you are off to enjoy an evening out where you can reconnect and be refreshed and renewed.

Please RSVP by December 12 by calling the parish office and letting them know the names and ages of the children so the meal and childcare can be arranged. Don’t miss it this month; the parents who came last month were thrilled and very happy!

Memorials

There is an opportunity to have a new memorial by donating toward the cost of the chapel candles. The candles need to be changed monthly. One box of twenty-four candles costs $62.60. If you are interested, please contact Carlyle Conrad, 724-1254.

New floral memorials for Christmas may be added by submitting the name(s) exactly as they are to be printed in the bulletins. The suggested minimum cost for this year is $14. Please submit the names to the office before December 12, 2007, or call Joanne Marinac at 728-6330. Please indicate on the envelope or check that it is for the Altar Guild. An acknowledgement will be mailed after the Christmas services.

Note: New Sunday memorials also can be added at any time during the year. Very often, a donor asks for a Sunday closest to the loved one’s birthday or anniversary. Please follow the same procedure as stated for new Christmas memorials.

UDR Movie Night

Friday, November 16th will be Movie Night sponsored by the UDR committee.  This month we’re showing “Race is the Place”, a video performance documentary that premiered on PBS’s Independent Lens program in 2005.  They describe it as “a hip-hop, fast-moving documentary jam, where the political becomes personal.  Using spoken work, song and just lain rants, a diverse group of performers and visual artists take on the topic of race in America. “

We’ll meet in the Olcott Room at 7:00.  Program length is 1 hour and will be followed by discussion. If you have questions, contact Sue Anderson at 724-3732.

12 Baskets Project Success Grows Each Month!

"And all ate and were filled: and they took up twelve baskets full.” Mark 6:42

Thank you to all who supported Safe Haven Domestic Abuse Shelter in October with the gifts of pillows, pots, pans and other kitchen supplies.

November’s opportunity for collection and service is Life House. Life House provides a host of services for teens in need. They provide for teens who are in need of housing, food, clothing, education, life skills and caring people to give them hope in an otherwise hopeless situation.

November’s collection is socks and underwear. Many of the teens who come to Life House have very few clothes and when using the shower facilities at the center, often times will have to redress in their underclothes. Life House staff would like to provide new socks and underwear to these teens. When considering your donation, please keep in mind that they are teens just like any other teens, and so you are encouraged to look for clothing items that are appropriate for this age group. The boys like boxer-type underwear, mostly large and extra large sizes; the girls underwear could be bras or underpants in medium, large or extra large sizes. Socks can be basic in design and color and in any size.

November’s service opportunity is making pies and rolls and serving Thanksgiving dinner to the teens at Life House on Wednesday, November 21. In the past, the staff of Life House has provided the meal, but because of budget and staffing constraints have had to use store-bought cookies for dessert. We began helping out last year, and the teens who came as well as the staff, were overwhelmed and greatly touched by our goodies and also by all who came and served the meal. Our homemade pies, other desserts and dinner rolls let the teens know that someone cared about them enough to provide this special touch to their holiday meal. We have enough servers but if you would like to provide a pie, some rolls or some type of desert, a sign-up sheet is located on the wall next to the church office. You can add you name and someone will call you with specifics.

If you build it, they will come...

Several people have commented to me about the large number of kids using the Kid Zone at coffee hour, and how wonderful it is to see so many kids at coffee hour, at church, and in Sunday school. It is true that if you build it, they will come. If a church invests its time, energy and money like St. Paul’s has into providing programs and opportunity for children, the parents will come; and we are seeing the fruits of our labors this fall.

We have several new families who have joined St. Paul’s because they were looking for quality faith experiences for their children, and I’m proud to be a part of that here at St. Paul’s. People can see that we are a welcoming community, one that is open to all wherever they are at in life’s journey and acceptance of their children.  Parents have commented to me that they didn’t feel “awkward” or “anxious” walking into St. Paul’s and bringing their kids.

As we spend time thinking about stewardship this month, it warms my heart to see all the new faces, along with the dedicated faces that have been coming to St. Paul’s for years, journeying together to explore their faith and realize God in their midst. Sue Van Oss.
