WELCOME TO LENT: This
Wednesday, February 6, is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the Season of
Lent.
Services at St. Paul’s will be at noon, 5:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Each
service will include communion and the distribution of ashes.
A soup lunch will follow the noon service, and a brief video (“The Power
of Forgiveness”) and discussion will take place after lunch.
The Season of Lent is
the 40 day church season that mirrors Jesus’ 40 days in the desert prior
to his public ministry. In the early church, Lent was an intense period
of reflection, reconciliation and discernment for adults who were
preparing to be baptized.
Lent has traditionally been characterized by prayer, fasting and
alms-giving. Reconciliation and self-reflection are also hallmarks of
the season. Christians are encouraged to spend more time in prayer,
perhaps by attending a week day celebration of Eucharist, and to engage
in the disciplines of fasting and generous good works as they are able.
Lent is a wonderful time to seek reconciliation with those whom we have
harmed and those who have harmed us. Celebrating the
sacraments of reconciliation (BCP pp. 447-452)
is especially appropriate during Lent. Bill and Margaret are
available for reconciliation by appointment.
